Given:

Five People: A, B, C, D, and E are sitting around a round table. Some are sitting inwards and some outwards.

From the Statement I:

1. A is to the immediate left of C and second to the right of D.

2. Immediate neighbors of A are sitting facing outside.

3. B is not an immediate neighbor of A.

  • We are unable to determine the direction of B in both cases. Also, no case is getting eliminated.

Therefore, statement I alone is not sufficient.

Now,

From the Statement II:

1. E sits second to the left of A, who is to the immediate right of D.

2. Immediate neighbors of D sit facing the center.

F1 Prashant Shraddha 15.07.21 D25

3. C is not an immediate neighbor of D.

  • Here, we cannot determine the directions as well as the positions of B and C.

F1 Prashant Shraddha 15.07.21 D26

  • Here, B is facing the centre. However, case 1 is neither eliminated nor it gives us the direction of B.
  • This leaves us with 2 cases because in case I B could be facing inside or outside.

Therefore, statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Important Points

  •  If there are two cases, a conclusion can be drawn only if one of the following conditions are satisfied:
  1. One of the cases is eliminated OR
  2. Both cases give you the same conclusion.

From Statements I and II:

  • Statement I says that A is second to the right of D.
  • Statement II says that A is to the immediate right of D.
  • Because the position of A is different in both statements, we cannot combine the facts in statements I and II.

Hence, "The facts in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question." is the correct answer.
