- Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
- The Act makes the following provisionsrelating to the organisation and functioning of Lok Adalats :-
- The state Legal Services Authority or the District Legal Services Authority or the Supreme Court Legal Services committee
- High Court Legal Services Committee or Taluk Legal Services Committee may organise Lok Adalats at such intervals and places

- Functions of NALSA -:

- Settlement of disputes for those marginalised and poor people who cannot afford a lawyer.
- Frame most effective and economical schemes for the purpose of making legal services under provision of this Act.
- Encourage the settlement of disputes by way of negotiation, arbitration and conciliation.
