• Except Panchayat Committees, all the bodies given as options can organise 'Lok Adalats'.
• Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
• The Act makes the following provisionsrelating to the organisation and functioning of Lok Adalats :-
  • The state Legal Services Authority or the District Legal Services Authority or the Supreme Court Legal Services committee
  • High Court Legal Services Committee or Taluk Legal Services Committee may organise Lok Adalats at such intervals and places 
  • And for exercising such jurisdiction and for such areas as it thinks fit.
• The National Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 (NALSA) :-
  • To provide free legal services to the weaker sections of the society. 
  • Cheif Justice of India shall be the Patron-in-Chief.
  • Second senior-most judge or any judge of the Supreme Court, who is nominated by President of India in consultation with the cheif justice of India is the Executive Chairman.
  • Aim :- To ensure that Justice is not denied to any citizen because of the economic and other disabilities.
  • Functions of NALSA -:
    • Organise Lok Adalats .
    • Settlement of disputes for those marginalised and poor people who cannot afford a lawyer.
    • Frame most effective and economical schemes for the purpose of making legal services under provision of this Act.
    • Encourage the settlement of disputes by way of negotiation, arbitration and conciliation.
