Given:

Two numbers are in the ratio of 4 : 9

Mean proportional between them is 24

Formula used:

If a and b are two numbers, then mean proportional = √(a × b)

Calculation:

Let the two numbers be 4x and 9x

Mean proportional = √(4x × 9x)

⇒ 24 = √(36x2)

⇒ 24 = 6x

⇒ x = 4

First number = 4x = 4 × 4 = 16

Second number = 9x = 9 × 4 = 36

Positive difference = 36 - 16 = 20

∴ The correct answer is option (1).
