Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDF- When a voltage is applied across a diode in a way that it conducts electric current, then the voltage drop across a conducting diode is called forward voltage.
- The forward voltage drop of Germanium, Silicon, and LED are as shown:
Germanium diode - 0.3 V
Silicon diode - 0.7 V
LED (Light Emitting Diode) - 1.3 V
- Therefore, LED’s have a higher forward voltage as compared to a Silicon diode.
- An LED is used in forward biasing only. In reverse bias, it has no use. So it has a low reverse breakdown voltage.
- LED is a type of diode that emits light when placed in an electric field.
- It uses a direct bandgap semiconductor. Ex. GaAs, GaP, etc.
- It works on the principle of Electroluminisance.
- Mode of operation: In forward biased only
