In the field of Physics or any practical application of Physics, measurement of the variables are always necessary for proper understanding of any phenomenon. On the same path, for measuring electricity variables like current, voltage, and resistance the device named a multimeter is used. Based on the readout, multimeters can be classified as either analog or digital. This Physics article will explain the digital multimeter in detail.

Digital Multimeter

A digital multimeter is a multimeter that measures variables like current, voltage and resistance on a digital display. Digital multimeters are mostly used nowadays for the measurement of electrical properties in both AC and DC circuits. These multimeters have two probes for the positive and negative terminal which are colour coded as black and red respectively. The black terminal is plugged into the port of a multimeter which is marked as COM, whereas the red is used to touch the various contacts where the measurement of the variable is required.

The digital multimeter has a knob in the centre which can be turned to determine the different range of the measurements required. It also has a screen on which the results of the measurements are displayed.

During the measurement of voltage, the voltage to be measured is first attenuated to a suitable range and then rectified into a DC signal which is then fed into an analog-to-digital converter to get the RMS value of the AC voltage.

For measurement of resistance, a constant current provided by the source is made to pass through the unknown resistance, and the voltage across the terminals of the resistor is given to an Analog-to-Digital Converter, whose output in the form of resistance is displayed.

Types of Digital Multimeter

The different types of digital multimeters are as follows:

Fluke Digital Multimeter

This is a commonly used multimeter since, alongside the normal measurements of the variables of the electrical circuit. It can also be used for the measurement of duty cycles, pressure, frequency temperature, etc. These multimeters are protected against transient voltage (which are sudden spikes in the voltage signals) and also the range for most measurements is automatically selected in these multimeters. These types of multimeters are used for calibration purposes.

 

Clamp Digital Multimeter

This type of multimeter is used to measure the flow of current in a circuit. It does the measurement using a clamp and thus its name. It measures the current flowing in wires, it mostly does that by the property of magnetic field generation of electricity flowing in wires. These multimeters are mostly used by professionals.

Autoranging Multimeter

Autoranging multimeters as the name suggests are multimeters which are able to automatically detect the range of electrical components which are being measured and adjunct accordingly. Thus it is a very beginner-friendly tool, however, it is the most expensive of all the types of multimeters.

Advantages

  • The measurements can be stored and transferred onto another device like a PC.
  • Auto polarity functions are included.
  • The accuracy is high.
  • The range can be selected manually or automatically.
  • It provides multifunctionality.

Disadvantages 

  • The digital multimeter is expensive.
