Any particular day that is celebrated must have a strong sense of history behind it. We can understand the significance of the day with more clarity when we look into the history behind it. Before that, did you know that the world has experienced precedented growth in population from 1950 to 2020? The population tripled in size between these years! The advancement in the field of science and technology paved the way for this enormous growth! 

World Population Day is celebrated every year on July 11. International days are occasions to educate the public about global concerns and to mobilize political will. In many cases it is also to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. World Population Day comes in the first category where it is majorly targeted to address the global concern of increasing population. 

Why to Celebrate World Population Day?

World Population Day is an initiative of the United Nations to focus on people. According to the UN, reaching the massive numerical landmark of eight billion is fantastic. But at the same time we have to be concerned about the eight billion people who should have equal opportunities to live dignified and fulfilled lives. First celebrated in 1989, the population of the world at that time was only five billion. 

The UN understood the major crisis of exploding population growth and was sure it would be a serious concern for the whole world. Considering the major issue of increasing population, the UN decided to raise awareness among the people about the effects of population inflation. 

Motive of World Population Day

The main motive of the World Population Day at the beginning was to control the humongous growth of population in the world. As I told earlier, from the year 1950 after both the World Wars, the population in the world began to increase in lighting speed. If not taken seriously at that point, experts were sure that the upcoming population may not be able to accommodate a healthy life. 

After announcing World Population Day, the motive of it still remains the same, with slight additions with regards to modern society. The importance of World Population Day is crucial for us to understand as we are gonna shape the future world tomorrow. 

Significance of World Population Day

In the year 2018, the United Nations announced a very powerful slogan, "Family planning is a Human Right". This makes absolute sense and people welcomed the idea. World Population Day in 2018 emphasizes the importance of family planning. It challenged the fifty year old legislation where women were allowed to refuse multiple pregnancies taking place too close. 

In the year 2019, the aim of World Population Day was to spread awareness about reproductive health problems among people. Women in large numbers face poor reproductive health and every day around 700 women die while giving birth. So the main motive this year is to make people understand about reproductive health and to improve it.

Furthermore, this occasion is celebrated to create awareness about the population issues to people. This not only includes the issue of population increase but also teaches us much more vital knowledge. 

What We Learn From World Population Day?

It is very essential to teach people about their rights with respect to reproduction and family planning. World Population Day includes spreading awareness about issues like right to health, gender equality, infant mortality and reproductive health. Moreover, it opposes child marriage and adolescent pregnancy. Almost half of the pregnancies that happen in the world are unintended. Crime done to women that make them pregnant without their consent is a major cause for this. Also, unsafe abortions lead women to give birth without any option. 

Over 15 million pregnancies take place between the age 15 to 19 in women. It is sad that around 4 million pregnancies end in abortion due to unavoidable circumstances and poor reproductive health. Moreover, issues related to the sexuality of an individual must be addressed with responsibility. We must respect every gender and their sexuality like we do our own. 

World Population Day strongly opposes all the injustice done to women that affects the whole global community in many ways. It also imposes the necessity to learn about sex education, usage of contraceptives and to knowledge on sexually transmitted diseases. We as youngsters must understand these in the most responsible way to live in a respectful society in the future. 

Purpose of World Population Day

The world has seen a high level of urbanisation and accelerating migration ever since the late nineteenth century. People settle in urban areas more than in rural areas and the population increases accordingly in cities. This has far-reaching implications with regards to increase in population. Larger populations affect economic development, employment, income distribution, social protections and poverty. These issues are not simple as it seems and if not addressed properly, it can collapse an entire nation. 

Advantages of World Population Day

Furthermore, these populations affect efforts to promote universal health care, housing, education, sanitation etc. World Population Day addresses all these issues and lets the policymakers understand the amount of people living in a region. It helps to understand people's age, their dependents, where they live and so on. 

1. Empowering the Youth

World Population Day empowers young boys and girls, especially students like us. Students are taught about sex education and gender equality. Most notably, girl children are taught how to avoid unwanted pregnancies and to maintain good reproductive health. 

2. Youth-friendly Teachings

Both the genders are treated equally and it makes unity among them. The so-called gender stereotypes where male domination and female oppression will be ruled out by this. Students are taught about sexually transmitted diseases and how contraceptives are used in a youth-friendly. In today's society, these are valuable lessons that are mandatory to be taught to every individual. 

3. Knowledge on Reproductive Health

It ensures that the laws regarding the protection of girl children are followed. Students learn about the concept of marriage and the responsibilities that come along with it at an early age itself which is absolutely necessary. In today's world, it is very important to empower the youth regarding reproductive health so that they are aware of what is what. 

Major Focus of World Population Day

The major aim of World Population Day is to fundamentally create awareness of reproductive issues which directly influences the world population. By transmitting knowledge related to these issues, the society will be more educated towards population growth and as well as population control. 

To summarise all this, the sole objective of World Population Day is to empower the youth with knowledge about sex education and reproductive issues. One might think that these could be learnt as children turn into adults and have responsibilities. It is a complete nonsense thought process. Sadly in India, this mindset prevails and children revealing their interests in knowing sexuality is considered a taboo. World Population Day demolishes these stereotypes and enhances the importance of educating the youth regarding reproductive health. 

Furthermore, the youth needs to understand the concept of population growth and family planning so that future generations will have a brighter way of living. To conclude, World Population Day is celebrated to increase public awareness of concerns related to population inflation.
