The unit of measuring the sound intensity is the decibel (dB) which is a logarithmic scale.
Decibel corresponds to the sound pressure interpreted by human ears. Human ears have differential abilities to respond to different frequencies of sound, and to address the differences, a weighted (dB ) scale is used.
Maximum sound level (L_max) is the maximum level of sound (or loudness) for a particular event such as in case of an explosion, or in case of whistling sound by train etc., where an event’s duration may vary, for example, a long duration of sound from moving train for a person standing adjacent to railway lines as opposed to a short duration of fired gun.
