The line joining the points (–5, 5) and (7, –3) internally in the ratio 3 : 1

Concept used:

(x, y) = [{m₁ × x₂ + m₂ × x₁}/m₁ + m₂], [{m₁ × y₂ + m₂ × y₁}/m₁ + 2]

Calculation:

Let P(x, y) be the point that divides the line segment internally.

Here, m1 = 3, m2 = 1

(x1, y1) = (-5, 5) and (x2, y2) = (7, -3)

Putting the above values in the above formula, we get

⇒ x = [{3(7) + 1(-5)}/4], y = [{3(-3) + 1(5)}/4]

⇒ x = 16/4, y = -4/4

x = 4, y = -1

∴ (4, -1) is the point that divides the line segment
