Welding:
Welding is a process of joining metals, and non-metals that can be similar or dissimilar with or without the application of heat, pressure, and filler material.
Welding Defect:
It can be defined as the irregularities formed in the given weld metal due to the wrong welding process or incorrect welding patterns etc. Welding defects may occur either outside or inside the weld metal.
Some Important welding defects are as follows:
Defects | Description | Image |
Weld Spatter | An unintentional deposition of weld metal in the shape of a small globular on the job surface.
Incomplete Fusion | No melting of the edges of the base metal at the root face or on the side face or in between the weld runs.
Undercut | Formation of groove or channel in the parent metal at the toe of the weld.
Incomplete Penetration | Failure of weld metal to reach the root of joint.
Porosity | Cavity type discontinuity formed in the weld area due to entrapped gas.
Overlap | The flow of metal onto the surface of base metal without fusing it.
Underfill | A longitudinal continuous or intermittent area in the weld surface that is below the adjacent surface of the parent metal. |
