Explanation:

Saturation temperature:

  • The saturation temperature is the temperature for a corresponding saturation pressure at which a liquid boils into its vapor phase.
  • At atmospheric pressure, the saturation temperature of the ammonia is -33.6°C.
  • At atmospheric pressure saturation temperature of the water is 100°C.

from the above data, we conclude that for the same pressure the saturation temperature of ammonia is lower than the saturation temperature of the water.

Application:

This phenomenon is used in Vapour Absorption Refrigeration System(VARS), as ammonia is used as a refrigerant, and water is used as an absorber in VARS. In the generator mixture of ammonia and water is heated. The saturation temperature of ammonia is lower than the saturation temperature of the water hence ammonia vapor goes to the condenser first and separate from the mixture. water goes back to the absorber.
