Concept:

cos 2x = cos2 x – sin2 x = 2 cos2 x - 1 = 1 – 2 sin2 x

Calculation:

cos 4x

= cos 2(2x)

= 2 cos2 2x – 1                                         (∵cos 2x = 2 cos2 x – 1)

= 2 (1 – 2 sin2 x)2 – 1                              (∵ cos 2x = 1 – 2 sin2 x)

= 2 [1 – 4 sin2 x + 4 sin4 x] – 1               [∵ (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + b2]
