Question
Download Solution PDFIf the price of petrol increases by 25% and Sunita intends to spend only an additional 12.5% on petrol, by what percent should she reduced the quantity of petrol purchased (nearest to an integer)?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
Increase in Price = 25%
Increase in expenditure = 12.5%
Concept Used:
Total Expenditure = Price × Quantity.
Calculation:
Let the increase in Quantity be 'x' units.
Increase in Price = 25% = 1 + (1/4) = 5/4
Increase in expenditure = 12.5% = 1 + (1/8) = 9/8
Now,
Decrease in Quantity = 9/8 = (5/4) × (x)
⇒ x = (9 × 4)/ (8 × 5) = 9/10
⇒ (1/10) × 100 = 10%.
∴ The correct answer is 10%.
Shortcut TrickCalculation:
Price(+25%) | 4 | 5 |
Consumption | x | y |
Expenditure(+12.5%) | 8 | 9 |
So,
⇒ x : y = 8/4 : 5/9 = 10 : 9
% Decrement in consumption = (1/10) × 100 = 10%
∴ The correct answer is 10%.
