What is a Bending Moment?

Shear Force and Bending Moment FAQ

The sum of algebraic forces operating on each side of the section of a mechanical element section is known as the shear force. All of the moments of the forces operating on each side are added together algebraically to form the bending moment

The Bending Moment is either at its highest or its lowest at the points where Shear Force is zero or changes sign. The Shear Force and Bending Moment are related in this way.

By drawing the SFD and BMD, you can find out where in the structure to put reinforcements to counteract the force and moment.

The concept of Bending Moment is used to calculate the place and intensity of the bending in a beam when forces are applied.

Moment distribution is an essential technique for the analysis of continuous beams and frames. Hardy Cross invented this approach in 1932.
