International development is a multi-disciplinary context of human development which seeks to implement long-term solutions to problems by helping developing countries create the necessary capacity needed to provide such sustainable solutions to their problems. One such programme was the MDGs.
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):
- In September 2000, world leaders came together at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to adopt the United Nations Millennium Declaration.
- The Declaration committed nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and set out a series of eight time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that came to be known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
- The aims of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were to encourage development by improving social and economic conditions in the world's poorest countries
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2000 come to end in 2015. Endorsed by 189 countries (at the time), the MDGs have indeed been an unprecedented global effort to achieve eight measurable development goals that were identified collectively.
- To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- To achieve universal primary education
- To promote gender equality
- To reduce child mortality
- To improve maternal health
- To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
