Diode

A diode is a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. It allows current to flow easily in one direction but severely restricts current from flowing in the opposite direction.

The current flows in a diode when it is forward-biased. During forward-biased conditions, the anode is connected to the positive terminal of the battery whereas the cathode is connected to the negative terminal of the battery.

During reverse-biased conditions, the anode is connected to the negative terminal of the battery whereas the cathode is connected to the positive terminal of the battery.

The current through the diode is given by:

Io = Reverse saturation current

q = Charge

v = Voltage

k = Boltzmann's constant

T = Temperature

η = Ideality factor
